  • called as a wild cherry, a sweet cherry, or a gean,
  • It is s a species of cherry, a flowering plant of the rose family Rosaceae, native to Europe, Anatolia, Maghreb, western Asia. 
  • Wild cherries have been an item of human food for several thousands of years. The stones have been found in deposits at Bronze Age settlements throughout Europe. Wild cherry were found at Desenzano del Garda or Lonato, near the southern shore of Lake Garda, Italy. 
  • Cherries were being cultivated in Asia Minor (VIIIc), and soon after in Greece.
  • Uses: Cherry tree is often cultivated as a flowering tree. It is often used in parks,  less often as a street or garden tree. 
  • Gum from the bark is a substitute for chewing gum. Cherry wood is used to make musical instruments. ATTANTION: All members of the genus produce hydrogen cyanide, a poison that gives almonds their characteristic flavour. This toxin is found mainly in the leaves and seed and is readily detected by its bitter taste.
