Ilex in Latin means the holm-oak or evergreen oak (Quercus ilex). Plant, family Aquifoliaceae, genus of 400 - 600 species . The species are evergreen and deciduous trees, shrubs, and climbers from tropics to temperate zones worldwide.
- History: Different groups of ILEX became isolated wheh the Earth broke 82 milions years ago. Changes in the groups to adapt in various conditions were long.
- Ornamental use: Many of the holly species are wideused as ornamental plants in temperate/European gardens and parks,
- Culture: Holly is commonly refered to Christmas time. People use it as a tradicional Christmas dekoraton (Christmas thorn) on Christmas cards. The plant carries Christian symbolism.
